Business Trade Review’s guidelines for authors

The African Business Trade Association (ABTA) exists to create opportunities for businesses and investors to succeed in Africa. To do that, through the Business Trade Review (BTR) we provide access to thriving markets, offer insights, connect our members, and strengthen influence where it matters most.

We welcome high-quality, insight-driven articles, research and reports that help advance understanding of Africa’s evolving trade and investment landscape.

What we publish

  • Industry trends, challenges, risks, and opportunities

  • Policy, regulation, and market developments

  • Skills, workforce, and leadership issues

  • Investment, finance, and economic insights

  • Country or regional outlooks with industry relevance

Our editorial standards

We are committed to publishing high-quality, credible, and independent insights trusted by industry leaders and decision-makers. Our editorial standards set out what we expect from contributors to ensure we maintain originality, integrity, and transparency.

Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI)

All submissions must be the work of the named author. Writing that is entirely generated by GenAI must never be presented as the author’s own work. GenAI tools may be used in a limited way to support research, ideation, and editing. Authors remain fully responsible for fact checking, sourcing, and the integrity of their submissions.

Originality and prior publication

Submissions must be original and unpublished elsewhere. If a submission is accepted, authors will be asked to confirm that the work is entirely their own and has not appeared elsewhere. Authors must be prepared to share sources for factual claims.

Transparency and disclosure

We ask our authors to disclose any financial relationships they have with companies mentioned in their work, or any relevant interests in the topics they cover. Submitted work must not include overt marketing or sales promotions.

Responsible use of information

All content must respect confidentiality, uphold accuracy, and demonstrate responsible use of data.

Style and format

We publish original insight and analysis that explores new ideas and brings fresh perspectives. We are looking for work that:

  • is written in plain, professional English, accessible to a global industry audience

  • presents a clear point of view or insight, supported by evidence, experience, or professional expertise

  • does not assume prior knowledge and uses clear, specific examples that a non-expert audience can understand

  • identifies new opportunities and offers solutions

  • is between 700 – 1,500 words for articles and up to 5,000 words for more in-depth analysis.

The BTR editor may make changes for clarity or length. You will always see and approve the final version before publication.

Contributor compensation

ABTA does not pay for contributed content. Contributions are welcome as part of our commitment to sharing insight, advancing industry dialogue, and elevating expert perspectives.

Copyright

Authors retain copyright in their work. By submitting a piece for publication, contributors grant ABTA the right to publish, edit, and distribute the content, with full attribution, across its platforms and channels.

How to submit

You may submit a completed piece or pitch an idea for editorial consideration before submitting a full piece.

Please email completed submissions to abta@abta.africa.

Your message should include:

  • A brief description of the work in the body of the email, with the submission as an attachment (in Word or PDF format)
